I guess it's a good thing I wasn't on this cruise as I'm going to be on a soft-food diet until I recover from gum surgery. And according to the dentist, that may be another few weeks.![]()

Basically, this dessert is ice cream on sponge cake covered with meringue and browned quickly in a hot oven.
There is a Baked Alaska Parade (some ships have stopped doing this) with the waiters carrying the dessert around the dining room and everyone cheering and waving their napkins.
They used to flame it with brandy, but now some dining rooms put sparklers in the top of each Alaska for effect instead of the brandy.
It has long been a tradition of the seas!
I usually order a different dessert myself.![]()
Thanks. It never sounded appetizing, but that's because I had never actually seen or heard what was in it. I always assumed there was some kind of fruit or weird cake with nuts in it and never wanted to try it. I like my fruit raw, for the most part. But ice cream and meringue...that my kind of dessert!
Thank you, Z., for unlocking the mystery by posting the foodporn and to Char for the verbal definition that needed to go with it.
Basically that is what it is and basically I just ordered it to take a picture of it.
Carnival doesn't do the parades but some other cruise lines still make a spectacle of it.

The first time I ever had Baked Alaska was on my first cruise (Carnival) and they were doing the parade back then. Come to think of it, the only time I ever have B.A. is on a cruise.
