The last thing they want is a bunch of "do gooders" bringing stuff and then attracting attention which would only lead to more inspection of the awful living and working conditions under which the people working for them would be under. They shoo you away from the gates where the natives are allowed in and out to the resort. It is too bad Haiti can't get their act together (I don't mean that as a casual remark) because with the beauty of their island and location they could be a resort haven, like St Thomas, St John, etc.
Best thing you can do while on your cruise to help people down there is to spend your money locally, not on board.
