Hurricane Gustav came ashore yesterday as a Category 1 Hurricane, and hung around all night, dumping more water on an already soaked nation. He appears to be finally pulling away late this afternoon...

And we are beginning to get damage reports in . . . as well as reports of fatalities.

As best I can tell at this point, there have been 5 confirmed, 17 unconfirmed deaths from Gustav in Haiti.
Fears are that both numbers could rise. (see next post)

Bad News from Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Gustav drifted away from Haiti and the Dominican Republic on Wednesday after killing 22 people . . .

. . . Gustav's torrential rains triggered floods and mudslides that killed at least eight people in the Dominican Republic and 14 in neighboring Haiti, officials said.

Among the dead in Haiti were at least three people killed in a mudslide, a woman who died trying to cross a river and another person hit by a falling tree, officials said.

In the Dominican Republic, seven people from the same family were buried under mud when a hillside collapsed just north of Santo Domingo . . .

Cable TV News outlets are reporting that Haiti's death toll from Gustav is up to 79.

Officials said some 15,000 Haitian families were affected by Gustav, which levelled some 3,000 dwellings and damaged another 11,458.

At least 77 people died in Haiti after it was hit by Gustav, which blasted Louisiana with powerful winds and rain as a category two hurricane on Monday. Gustav later weakened as it passed overland and was downgraded to a tropical storm.

Gustav killed a total of more than 100 people as it tore across the Caribbean and into the United States.
