Key West

Please help me out. RC dropped Jamaica and insists that we go to Key West in a January 2006 cruise. We will be there from 3:00 p.m. to midnight. What is there to do in KW that doesn't involve drinking and drugs? We love lighthouses, history, sunsets and feral chickens. Does anybody have any tips?

I hate to make this any worse than it already is, but I would stay right around main street during daylight, then go back to the ship for dinner and the sunset!! Key West can be dangerous at night. I wouldn't stay there after dark!!

That is exactly what we do when in Key West! Back on the ship by dinnertime! Here's some of the things we've done while there.

We've rode the Conch Tour Train in Key West a couple of times. It's a good value for your money. We've visited Harry S Truman Little White House before. Parts of it are free. The grounds are quite beautiful.

I wanted to see the Truman White House and Sunset at Mallory Square. But we went on the Conch Tour instead, because that's what DH wanted. We ate at Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville on Duval Street, and did some souvenir shopping and browsed in art galleries there too. I never felt unsafe, but we always stayed where it was well lit. We even went shopping at a drug store nearby.

The most unusual thing we did was stand in the middle of the street while an Orthodox rabbi lit a giant electric menorah for Chanukah, that was attached to one of the balconies on Duval st. That wasn't so strange, because this particular sect lights Large menorahs in cities all over the world. But I think this was the only one attended by a man painted silver, dressed like the Tin Man, and riding a bicycle.

The "Cat" gift store

The bride and I were trying to remember something positive about our last stop at KW. We remembered the chickens, the cool silver human sculpture on the bicycle, and a gift shop with "cats" in the store name. Like we said, if you rule out drinking, and drugs, we couldn't find much to do...
The other thread on Port of Key West has some nice links. Thanks for that.

The place to be for sunset is Mallory Square.

Watch the time because the sun sets fast.

Key West is a beautiful port. We went on the sailing excursion while we were there and shopped in the little shops... very cool port!
