Montego Bay / Sunset Beach Resort

From Carnival Conquest Nov 2007.

I decided to give Sunset Beach Resort in Montego Bay a try this time.
Sunset
{there is also one in Ocho Rios}

The resort was scheduled for renovation for the month of September 2007 but there was still lots of work going on in November. They hoped it would be completed by Christmas. Welcome to island time. But before I get too far ahead of myself...

Jamaica is a beautiful country and the port area is quite secure.

The cruise ships dock here - no tendering

You can't say you weren't warned.

As mentioned, the port area is quite secure so you can get off the ship and wonder around the shops inside the cruise terminal.

I picked up one of the rasta hats with built-in dreadlocks for $15. Styling and jamming, mon!

In one corner of the terminal the tourist board has a booth. They can answer just about any of your questions including taxi fares. They have lots of brochures and some maps, also. They said it was $2 pp for a taxi to Sunset Beach but since I was a party of 1, it would be $5 each way. Whatever. You can see the resort from the upper decks of the cruise ship, but I wasn't really sure how far it was or what was in between.

The road had more than a few potholes (lots of rain), so I guess I got my $5 worth in wear and tear on the taxi. At the entrance to Sunset Beach there is a guard office so access is quite controlled.

They instructed the taxi driver where to take me. Once I exited the cab there were staff members to answer any questions including where to go to pay for an all-inclusive day pass. It used to be $20/day for adults but when they added a water park the fee doubled to $40. They can provide towels if necessary, but I just brought one from the ship. They also will hold your sail and sign card which you later pick up from the guard at the entrance when you exit the resort.

They handed me a pocket map of the facility and gave some simple directions on where everything was, and I was off. With the construction, the main grill is closed and a bar or two, but there were still a couple of bars open, a temporary poolside grill, and a nice sit down restaurant with buffet.

There seem to be lots of activities, but there weren't very many people at the resort. All of the staff I dealt with were very friendly and there were NO vendors trying to sell anything.

Sit down restaurant

The rooms in this portion of the resort are open

Most of the construction is in the area of the towers

Main pool that was open - there is also a lazy river feature. I might bring my own tube if during a busy time, but this was anything but.

Temporary grill. The burgers were really good and the jerk chicken wonderful - and hot - although they can leave the sauce off if you desire.

The twin water slides exit together, but are qute different

This is the middle and almost deserted beach.

There was a bar at one end of this beach:

A jet passing in the distance reminded me that the Montego Bay airport is one of those where the runway comes almost to the water line!

Initial checkout of resort complete, I went snorkeling. I bring my own snorkel gear although it is available at the resort. Not sure if it is included in the fee, but I think it might be.

There seems to be lots of potential here, but also lots of potential ground to cover. I'll be better prepared for next time. Water clarity was not great close to shore but improved the further out I went.

By afternoon, water was starting to get a little cloudy so time to check out the water part.

On the way back in noticed a couple of large jelly fish that were pretty cool...

Some good views

Part of lazy river

Had to try the slides
