Please tell us ALL you know about Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee!
Need help because we aren't big coffee drinkers ... but like to take home gifts. Always, we have this problem in Jamaica of not knowing which to buy....
Do we buy the 100% or the blend? Most folks have grinders so is it better to buy whole beans? Roasted or raw? Is there a problem getting "ripped off" and not getting what you think you're buying?
Lu,
We have loved Blue Mountain coffee since our first trip to Jamaica back in the stone age, 82.
It is a wonderful gift for coffee lovers. I would suggest whole beans. You have to be very very careful where you buy it though. Buy roasted 100%..IMHO.
We actually were so thrilled to get it our last time in Jamaica, that we got outdated beans. Was not a happy camper when we got home either.
Since I didn't buy it at the right place, I don't know where to tell you to get it. I hope someone else knows! And btw, I accept Christmas gift from strangers

So...how do we know if we are getting FRESH beans? Is there any way to tell?

Lu, if I remember right there was a date code on the bags. Of course I didn't know it til I got home. Don't buy at a little shop that sells t shirts etc. Try a reputable dealer. Who that might be in Jamaica, I really don't know.

Exactly .... like we can trust the codes on the bags in Jamaica! A reputable dealer!
Has anyone ever tried ROASTING some RAW coffee beans? Wonder how this is done?

dont know if this will help or not, but here's something about the beans from the Blue Mountain Coffee website:
Did you know ?
The Jamaican Coffee Board reserves GRADE 1 beans for export only as a green, unroasted coffee. The higher the grade number, the bigger the bean size. This dictates any roasted coffee coming directly from Jamaica is usually a mix of Grade 1, 2 and even 3. The Board refers to this mix as “Triage”. If you seek the finest Blue Mountain Coffee, insist only on Grade 1 beans.

We absolutely LOVE the Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee - we get several pounds everytime we go there. Just make sure you get the JABLUM brand, produced by Mavis Bank. They are the best and really pay attention to quality. And we feel this is one of the most outstanding coffees in the world.
Never had a problem with outdated beans as we always look at the label. But we get the roasted whole bean and never get the blend.
If you're buying more than a couple of bags, you can usually negotiate a lower price.
Once opened, make sure you keep your coffee in an airtight container to keep it fresh. Some people recommend keeping that container in the refrigerator, which is what we do. And then to stretch it out, we only treat ourselves to this wonderful coffee on the weekends so it lasts longer.
