Jamaica

I am sailing to Jamaica February 07. I have heard from a few friends it is a "rough place" and to be prepared for the worst. (they went 3 years ago) Can anyone who has cruised there recently help me out? Looking for any suggestions and how you were treated once you got off the ship please.

We were treated Great at the port and while on excursion. When we got back to port afterwards and decided to take Taxi to town, the driver told us one price to get us to go with him, and then another price when we got in his car. Needless to say, we got out of his car into another one... Next one looked like it had been stolen, he literally hot wired it to get started. Once in town to shop, EVERYONE followed you wanting to give you a ride back. excuse me... i just got out of taxi..
People wanted us to take pictures with them for money. People kept wanting me to go into the back room to get my hair braided (my hair is very long) and it scared me to death. We looked accross street from the shopping area we were in, and it was roped off from others, and accross street standing out side (I think a bank) was a couople of armed police... I mean with BIG GUNS... kinda scary.

Now with that said, I will go back to Jamaica... but only do excursions, WILL not go off on our own to shop or anything,.

JMO, but I think using a guide is the way to go in Jamaica - either a ship's excursion or a privately arranged one.

We arranged a private custom tour with Pete O'Neil tours and had a fabulous time. We were never harassed by anyone at all and saw a lot of things on our own schedule.
