    Hi Margot

Which cruiseline will you be travelling with? It may give more detailed info in their shore excursion listing.

it is with Royal Caribbean. I did not find this info on their website. They tell us that the bus leave us in Rome but not exactly where. It could be interesting to know in advance for the preparation of this day....

I think they choose the drop off point that day, based on traffic, other bus tours, etc. On Royal's website, the Rome on Your Tour states.....

"Tour designed for guests who are already familiar with Rome & want to rediscover city on their own or for those guests who desire more independent sightseeing time. Coach leaves Civitavecchia for 90-min drive to Eternal City via highway. On reaching Rome, you are free to spend day as you wish. Escort will inform you where & at what time to meet for return to Civitavecchia."

When we went, we took the train into Rome from Civitavecchia and used the Metro to get to/from different parts of the City. We bought BIRG tickets which covered the train and metro for the day for around Euro 9.

thanks.....effectively we hesitate between train and excursion on your own, and we find excursion very expensive. This is more or less a shuttle bus from Civitavecchia to Rome....

On our visit to Rome, I saw several buses drop off paasengers near the Coliseum. From here it would be rather easy to visit both the Coliseum and the Forum.

If you could get 6 people, a private tour is the way to go.

You're absolutely right Margot. You're paying for a bus ride.

The train was very easy, it's about a 10 minute walk from where the Pier shuttles drop you at the gate to the station.

I agree Easy Private tours are very nice and you can see much more. We did a private tour in Livorno to Florence & Pisa and covered a lot of territory.

    Hi Ziggy,

On our next cruise we will also stop in Rome. If I have this right, when the ship docks there will be a free "Pier shuttle" which we take to a gate and then walk 10 minutes to the train station. Then we pay a set price for and all day transportation pass. Have I got it right? As always thanks for your help. Lee

    Hi Lee,

Yep, you've got it right We purchased BIRG tickets, which covered the cost of round-trip train transportation from Civitavecchia to Rome and the Metro for the day. Lee, really unless you are the first people off the ship, all you need to do is follow the crowd With the train fare being so much less expensive than the ship excursions, most people opt for the train.

We covered quite a bit of territory in Rome; since it was a Sunday and the Vatican was closed we bypassed that area entirely. After arriving by train, we got on the Metro and headed to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain, then hopped back on the Metro to head to the Crypt of the Capuchian (sp?) Monks, then back on the Metro to go to the Coliseum and Roman Forum before returning to the Metro to head back to the train station. We pre-purchased our Coliseum tickets online so we bypassed the general queue and only waited a few minutes to enter, plus they were cheaper to buy online. We really did see Rome on a budget
