Yep, you've got it right We purchased BIRG tickets, which covered the cost of round-trip train transportation from Civitavecchia to Rome and the Metro for the day. Lee, really unless you are the first people off the ship, all you need to do is follow the crowd With the train fare being so much less expensive than the ship excursions, most people opt for the train.

We covered quite a bit of territory in Rome; since it was a Sunday and the Vatican was closed we bypassed that area entirely. After arriving by train, we got on the Metro and headed to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain, then hopped back on the Metro to head to the Crypt of the Capuchian (sp?) Monks, then back on the Metro to go to the Coliseum and Roman Forum before returning to the Metro to head back to the train station. We pre-purchased our Coliseum tickets online so we bypassed the general queue and only waited a few minutes to enter, plus they were cheaper to buy online. We really did see Rome on a budget
Got it. We will follow the crowd and I am sure we will find the trains. The Vatican is closed on Sunday. Isn't that like closing your bar for the weekend? LOL Lee

The Vatican Museum & Sistene Chapel are open for free the last Sunday of the month, but closed all the other Sundays. It's closed because of church services for the parish members. I guess the Romans want to actually use St. Peter's for the purpose it was built? the nerve!

Here's a link to St. Peter's Basilica - Tourist Information

I never understood that I thought they built it for our use

Anyway, if you only have 6 hours in Rome I would either concentrate on The St. Peters Basilica and the Vatican Museum with the Sistine Chapel OR do a tour of the main sites (Coloseum, Trevi, Pantheon, Spanish Steps.....................)

If we are lucky we will be in Rome for the "Settimana della cultura" when all state-run sights (national museums, galleries, monuments, and archaeological sites) throughout Italy are admission-free. It is held near the end of April and April 19th has fallen within the festival week for the last 2 years. The 19th is when we will be in port. I am thinking we will save the Basilica, Vatican and Sistine for next time. Thanks for the reply. Lee
