IDEAS NEEDED - unusual things to do in or around ROME

Our upcoming cruise (Nov) includes a stop in Civitavecchia and most passengers will take excursions into Rome from there.

The problem is, we have been to Rome more than once...and it wasn't that long ago that we were looking at the Coliseum, St Peter's, The Forum, Trevi Fountain, etc etc. We did all those 'must see' sights and all the usual tourist stops. I don't want to do the exact same thing this time.

This time I would love to see something new in or around Rome. Whatever we can do in an 8 hour time frame, and we are willing to hire a private driver to get us there.

Does anybody know of anything really unusual to do or see IN ROME or anything fun or interesting to do, leaving from the port of Civitavecchia?

I found a private tour operator with some different itineraries of private tours, but I've never used them so I'm not recommending them, just their website for ideas

They list the typical Rome tours, but also some other ones that do not include Rome. They also state you can customize the Tours however you want, which I think is the case with all private tours. Here's a link to their website.

Actually, I have come up with what I plan to do.

I have been learning all about the Etruscan culture and civilization...they were there WAY before the Romans and their art and technology was so advanced, but so much about them remains such a mystery.

So I plan to go to Tarquinia (north of Civitavecchia, not far) and see the ancient tombs and what is said to be the best museum on their culture. And I also hear there's pretty good wne in that region, too!!! (Tuscany!!)
