Last time I was in St. Thomas, there were still spots that were not commercialized, but you are right, there are far fewer than there used to be.
will do Lulu, Be looking forward to what everyone here has to say about the ports. Know want to snorkel 2-3 x's, all else is whatever....

nealberk, when was your last time there? was there last yr and the lady who picked us up at airport, told us that she lived there all her life and it's gotten so bad that she won't pick up anyone unless reserve ahead of time, cause they would get a "last" minute call and when driver got there, there would be a group of men w/ to rob them. She won't even put her vans on the road during Carnival due to too much robberies and violence. A real shame. It's a very "angry" island too.

My last time there was about 2 1/2 years ago and we were on a tour to one of the old plantations on the island that was quite nice.
But, from what you say, it was a minor refuge in what has otherwise become a commercialized mess. Sorry to hear that.
ever been to St John? if you like beaches and snorkeling, its a paradise !! spent a week there and it's still very laid back and quiet, commercialism won't jam it up since 3/4s is national park. So should stay the same forever.
I hate when see these beautiful islands get taken over by stores, bars and bad elements. Even Dominica with it's huge poverty was still pretty and enjoyable.
guess better stop these postings, since they really belong on places topic forum.
Stay in touch.

We are a bit freewheeling about letting topics go a bit off topic and talking about ports is rather important no matter where it is (I really do keep pushing for a better search engine so we can let topics go wherever they may and have the search engine keep them all together.)
I actually have an old school mate who is in St. John as I recently discovered. Next time we do Easter Caribbean and we hit St. Thomas, I might just spend the day and go visit him.
BTW, we have had some interesting threads about commercialism of the ports. Check them out if you get the chance.
