    Our Very First Cruise

My husband and I are regular visitors to NYC and had never really been too interested in cruising. That all changed last year!! We were at the travel agents changing back our money when we noticed an advert for the QM2, Southampton to NY cruise.
We barely waited 24 hours before we booked the cruise through Virgin Holidays, who gave us a complimentary upgrade to an enclosed balcony room.

Last weekend we went out to start buying evening wear....VERY exciting!! and on Thursday we paid the balance.

Any advice on what clothes to take would be great.

Hi & Welcome to the site, a Cunard Transatlantic is a classic journey! As for what to wear I think elegance is the word, Cunard tend to be "posh!" Others will advise better than I.

    Hi and welcome to www.cruiselinefans.com

I am sure you will love QM2, I know I do.

As for what to wear, on a 6 night crossing there will be 2 casual first and last night, 3 formal and 1 semi-formal.

    For men:
Casual is jacket, but no tie required, but most men do wear one.
semi-formal, jacket and tie, a lot of men wear a suit
formal dinner jacket and black bow tie, a dark suit is ok

    For ladies:
I will let someone more qualified answer that, but you don't need to wear a ball gown for the formal night, a cocktail dress or smart tourser suit will do.
    Stephen

Cruises booked: Queen Victoria August 2012 and Queen Elizabeth December 2012.

I'm guessing from the description just above is that a woman can wear wedding-appropriate wear on formal night (but black is all right in this case) and elegant restaurant appropriate on semi-formal.

Hey Mandi Broad! Welcome to our friendly cruise community!

Planning for a first cruise is so much fun---especially the shopping!
As has been said, Cunard is a little more formal in their dress code, and Stephen has given you the details from a frequent Cunard cruiser point of view.

If you haven't found it yet, head over here --> Cunard Cruise Line to our Cunard forum for a little more give and take with those fine folks who sail on Cunard.

We also have a Roll Call at the top of the Cunard forum...have a look to see if your itinerary is listed. If not, go ahead and start a Roll Call to see if any of our members are sailing with you.
