If I don't know the answer I'm fairly certain I can find it.

When you board the ship they will ask for a credit card for your onboard account, they don't use cash on the ship except the casinos. You will need cash for spending ashore. If you don't have a credit card they will want a cash deposit instead.
In port you can do more or less what you like, stay on the ship/get off on your own/ do an organised trip. DO NOT MISS THE SHIP, THEY DO NOT WAIT!!

In Progresso, there is a 6 mile bridge that shuttles will take you across. Once across, you can walk around the square, or walk the 2 blks to the beach, or get with one of the excursions (from Carnival or independent ones).

We have been there twice. Once we took an independent tour that we purchased once at the square. It took us on an hour bus ride to the city of Merida which was very quaint and lovely.

The second time, we just walked to the beach from the square.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
