We took out first cruise back in 1978 on the Island Princess, one of The Love Boats from the TV series. The ship was only 20,000 grt We then sailed on the a couple ships that were even smaller The Cunard Princess (17,495) and the Starward (16,000). We then were looking at sailing on a newer ship that was much larger, almost 35,000 grt and a whopping 1200 passengers. We were actually concerned that the ship might be too big. and we might not like sailing with so many passengers.
I mention this here because the ship was the Nieuw Amsterdam, its current name is the Thompson Spirit. That note of the design of the main showroom. There are several elements that are totally different that most ships built after her.
Awww the Love Boats! I think everyone has such fond memories of them. 20,000 tonnes sounds incredibly small nowadays but back then ships where much smaller and more like ships that floating office towers! With smaller vessels it must be nice to be able to not have so many people around you. I guess it's nice a cosy too isn't it?
I've toured Thomson Spirit's sister last year, but only very
briefly, so I should know my way around here a little. I got a fact sheet form a guy at Harwich port about the ship, there's a bit of history on there. Very interesting how ships get passed around. It should be a lovely day when I tour her, especially if my drawing is displayed by then!

I see that you will also be touring my favorite class of ship. That would be the Radiance class of RCL. I have not sailed on the Jewel but she is much like the Radiance and Serenade that we have sailed on.
Yes John, were touring the Jewel this Friday. She's my favourite ship that calls at Harwich. Lonely sleek lines and the amount of glass used it the design in just amazing!
Out of all the ships at Harwich this is the one I've always wanted to get on. So it will be a very special day when I do. Not long left now at all!
