I was just looking it up myself. Nieuw Amsterdam is now the Thompson Spirit, which I think is due to call at my local port this year .

Did you know that there is a new Nieuw Amsterdam on the way ?
The name is not well appreciated by the HAL folks. There is a great opportunity for confusion when you have both a Amsterdam and a Nieuw Amsterdam. The average person will get confused when booking.

Harry, nice pictures of the Independence OTS. You really gave the feel of the ship in your picutres and my suspicions are correct - it looks just like a shopping mall. It would be interesting, but I still like the ships that feel like ships.

I write to the cruise line bosses normally get aboard, apart from my local port, although sometimes I will have to get the go ahead from the cruise line first.

The timetable from Harwich hasn't been released yet. But I know that the following are calling this year.... Jewel of the Seas, Celebrity Constellation, Discovery, Ocean Majesty, Eurodam, Costa Atlantica, Costa Magica and a few other but of course this is subject to change !

I hope that I can visit all of these at Harwich, but I also hope to visit the new Celebrity Equinox in July if there are any tours going on during her 6 night stop in Southampton. I also hope to visit the Queen Victoria for the first time. As well as QM2 again and get some great photos this time as I didn't have a digital camera last time. And of course I would love to see the Oasis of the Seas, but only time will tell what visits I have this year.

I will keep you all posted about it and let you know when I hear anything.

Good morning Harry. It is great you are able to do that and awesome you are sharing it with us
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

It's about a 170 mile drive for me to visit P&O Cruises. Although Project International's office is about only 10 miles or so.

I am sorry but I am not sure if I can help you on that one. I'll keep trying though, maybe one of my contacts will know. I'll see what I can do to help.

I did find this web page though, perhaps this might help you.

The point I was trying to make is that the tradition was always not to reuse the name of a ship that sank while in service. HAL broke from that tradition.
