MIAMI - The director of the NOAA National Hurricane Center plans to retire later this year.
Bill Read announced his plans to retire from the position on June 1, 2012, following a 40 year federal service career that began in the U.S. Navy in 1971.
"I had no idea I would ever be considered for such an honor," Read said of the position in a letter to National Hurricane Center staff.
"Since becoming the director in 2008, Bill has provided superb leadership at the National Hurricane Center as 63 tropical systems formed across the Atlantic Basin, including during two of the more active seasons on record. Bill's departure leaves a noticeable void to fill and gives us this moment to reflect and be thankful for his illustrious 40-year career that has provided great service to our country," said NOAA National Weather Service Director Dr. Jack Hayes.
Read said he plans to pursue other part-time opportunites. A search for his replacement will begin immediately.
