    NOAA predicts active hurricane season

    NOAA predicts active hurricane season

Government forecasters are expecting an above-average hurricane season this year, according to the seasonal outlook issued by NOAA's Climate Prediction Center.
NOAA predicts 12-18 named storms, 6-10 of which could become hurricanes.
Of those hurricane, three to six are expected to become major (Category 3 or higher) storms.
The seasonal average is 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.
While it may be an active year, that doesn't necessarily mean a lot of landfalling storms.
Last year's hurricane season was one of the busiest on record, with 19 named storms, including 12 hurricanes.
But those storms steered clear of the U.S. - in fact, no major hurricane has made a U.S. landfall in the last five years.
However, that's not a good reason to let your guard down.
"Now is the time, if you haven't already, to get your plan together for what you and your family would do if disaster strikes. Visit www.ready.gov to learn more. And if you're a small business owner, visit www.ready.gov/business to ensure that your business is prepared for a disaster," said FEMA administrator Craig Fugate, who once led emergency management operations for the State of Florida.
The six-month Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30.
Weather forecasters at Colorado State University have already predicted an above-average hurricane season with 16 named storms. They expect nine of those storms to strengthen into hurricanes, five of them major.

Don't they do this every year?

Part of this particular article is inaccurate - or I should say this line is:
"in fact, no major hurricane has made a U.S. landfall in the last five years."

Hurricane Ike was in Sept. 2008, and I still occasionally see some damage from that storm yet to be fixed.
As far as the comments from the FEMA Administrator, I take them very seriously.

Even St. Louis had major flooding when Hurricane Ike pushed in. I saw flooding behind my credit union, which resulted in water rescues at an adjoining apartment complex (about 3-4 miles from our house).

If it's anything like tornado season so far, the hurricane season could be bad!

Sue - Our NOAA weather radio has been sounding right and left over the last few days. I just came upstairs from the basement after an immediate tornado warning. After the Joplin tornadoes (now upgraded to F5 - 200 mph or higher), and the St. Louis "Good Friday" tornado, which disrupted airport traffic due to major damage to the main terminal and nearby neighborhoods, we know to take the weather seriously, just as with hurricane warnings. Worldwide weather has been crazy so far, so I don't doubt the hurricane predictions.

It has been insane, I admit to being nervous if it doesn't quiet down soon. There is an invest off the southern east cost of the U.S. but is moving SE so not a threat. Just weird everywhere. Be safe Sandie & please check in after it passes.
