Another thing we do, I know sounds like overkill, but in that safe room/ bathroom we had blankets pillows, set of jeans, long sleeve shirts, adult & kids leather gloves, sneakers, socks and Rubber boots for everyone. Plus a sledgehammer to get out if we are trapped. The kids were young so we had coloring books, games and books for them. Drinks, snacks, hand held can opener and a few canned foods. We have all these things stored in case we get hit again. All that said, during Charley, homes and businesses all around us had damage. We were the only one that didn't lose a shingle, the only issue we had was our fence leaned to the north as he came from the south. Didn't even lose our red flowers under our front windows. We did lose power for 2 weeks and it sucked. It was in August.
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.

Since Deb is LDS, we have the rudiments of a storage system. 10 bottles (5 gallon bottles) of water, basic foodstuffs, plenty of chocolate, granola bars, cereal, and the like.

We won't starve unless we are cut off for several weeks.

    Snacks are the best

Lulu, you wrote about the weird things people buy. For Hurricane Alicia, me and my 2 roommates went to the store separately, and when we got home we compared purchases.

I bought a dozen eggs, a crossword puzzle magazine, and some canned goods.
Roommate number 1 bought a dozen eggs, the National Enquirer and a some bags of Cheetos or tortilla chips.
Roommate number 2 bought a dozen eggs, Vogue magazine and fresh fruit.

Now why didn't we hardboil any of those eggs?

I've always lived near the water, between 10 and 25 miles from a coast. I get the house prepared, and during the worst of the storm, I sleep like a baby!
