Bastardi Calls for a Below Average Number of Hurricanes; U.S. Coast Still at Risk
AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center meteorologists, led by Chief Long-Range and Hurricane Forecaster Joe Bastardi, have released an expanded hurricane season forecast for 2009. The forecast builds on Bastardi's early season forecast by calling for a reduced overall number of storms, but warns that the East Coast of the U.S. could still be at risk of a major landfalling storm.
June 1st comes every year and we all wonder what is going to happen in OUR area! The storms end up affecting lots of folks who never think it will happen to them...BE PREPARED!
This is maybe a stange question but what happens with a cruise when there is a hurricane starting in the area of the ship? In Holland we don't have these kinds op hurricanes so it's hard for me to imagine what the impact is if one of them is in the area.
Also, from when to when is hurricaneseason?

Hi Gwen, welcome to CLF. Our season starts in June and ends in November. If a hurricane is in an area that a ship is, the ship will change direction and port away from the hurricane. The cruiseline would never put their passengers, crew, and ship in any danger. There could still be a little rough area, but not bad. Hurricane season is one of the cheapest times of year to sail as long as you are not booking for the ports
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.
Most people walk into and out of your life . . . but FRIENDS leave footprints in your heart
And, if the storm is hitting the port of initial embarkation or final disembarkation, the tiime or even day that the ship arrives at or leaves from the port will be changed.
This is not the decision of the ship's captain or even the cruise line, but rather, falls under the auspecies of the Coast Guard, and is enforced by them and the Port Authority.
The Port Authority will absolutely CLOSE the port to ALL traffic at a stated time. This means no ships can come into port and any there must put out to sea.
This is why we constantly advise those sailing during hurricane season - and especially during peak hurricane season - to make advance travel plans to arrive at their embarketion port a day or two early. Also, return flights should be ofthe type that can be altered, in case the ship can't get back into port on the scheduled day, or must implement final disembarkation at another port entirely due to damage to the original port..
You are more than welcome. How right you are1 Can't exactly drive home, either, can you?
We are not experts, but as people who ive in hurricane country, and follow tropical systems very closely, are always happy to share what we do know. Hopefully, it will help someone.
