Question Rip Currents - Rip Tides?

Rip Currents - Rip Tides: Are they the same thing?

Maybe Rip Tides is totally wrong ... just a local term?

I think they'rae two namaes for the same thing. Growing up, we called them UNDERTOWS. In some of the islands, they are called TOW CURRENTS.

In any event, they are DANGEROUS! Even if you are just standing in the edge of the water... say anything more than knee deep for strong swimmers ... less for non swimmers.

There have been several drownings (yes, fatailties) recently at Florida's beaches due to Rip Currents. People's feet were just ripped out from underneath them as the strong current towed them under and out.

And NO, they are NOT obvious in just looking at the water...

That was a great question, Lulu.

Plus, it gave us one more opportunity to warn non-coastal residents who may visit our beaches that they need to:

    1) Swim ONLY near a lifeguard and
    2) ALWAYS pay attention to the warning flags and signs.

    Thanks, ZY!

Guess it's OK for CM and me to call them Undertows and Riptides if we wish.

By whatever ever name ... they are dangerous!

Through the weekend: Threat of severe Rip Currents from Miami all the way up to Nantucket.

    Because of Hanna.
Ike is coming behind, so, there will no doubt be an extension of that threat.
