State declares hurricane prep tax holiday
To encourage residents to prepare for the 2008 hurricane season, the state will not charge sales taxes on certain items May 24-25.
The two-day Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday is a product of the Louisiana Legislature. It begins at 12:01 a.m. May 24 and ends at 11:59 p.m. May 25.
During the holiday, no sales taxes will be charged for the first $1,500 spent on flashlights, candles, two-way and weather-band radios, tarpaulins or other flexible waterproof sheeting, anchor systems or tie-down kits and fuel tanks.
The tax break also applies to batteries for small electronic devices, but not automobile and boat batteries. Cellular phone batteries and chargers along with non-electric food storage coolers, portable generators and storm shutters are included.
The holiday does not apply to hurricane-preparedness items or supplies purchased at airports, hotels, convenience stores or entertainment complexes.
More information on the tax holiday is available at the state Department of Revenue Web site, Louisiana Department of Revenue Homepage : Louisiana Department of Revenue.
