That is awful! And you know it's going to be so destructive in an area that is poverty stricken!

remarks:
151500z position near 21.6n 89.6e.
Tropical cyclone (tc) 06b (sidr) located approximately 120 nm south-
east of Calcutta, India, has tracked northward at 16 knots over the
past 06 hours. Tc 06b continues to track along the western periphery
of the subtropical steering ridge to the east and the increase in
the forward speed of motion has continued over the past 06 hours.
Tc 06b continues to display strong poleward outflow, but has begun
to feel some land influence as it approaches the coast of bangladesh.
The storm has weakened slightly from its peak intensity and now has
a current intensity of 130 knots. The intensity is based on Dvorak
T-numbers of 6.5/7.0 from pgtw at 151130z, and a CIRA multiplatform
satellite intensity estimate of 135 knots at 151200z. The storm will
continue to track northward and will make landfall along the south-
western coast of bangladesh prior to tau 06. The storm will track
more northeastward after landfall and will steadily weaken due to
land interaction and an increase in the vertical wind shear. Tc 06b
will dissipate over land prior to tau 48. The available objective
aids are in good agreement with this forecast scenario. Maximum
significant wave height at 151200z is 40 feet. Next warnings at
162100z, 160300z, 160900z, and 161500z.//

They are saying the storm surge could be as high as 18 feet, which would spell BIG trouble for this low-lying coastal area.

It gets worse!

Sidr now a Category 5 equivalent.

From The Weather Channel web site:

Tropical Cyclone Sidr has increased in forward speed, continuing to push north through the Bay of Bengal toward eastern India and Bangladesh.

As of early Thursday morning (U.S. time), Tropical Cyclone Sidr had strengthened with winds now at 155 mph (category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale of hurricanes). On its current track, it should make landfall by mid-day today (U.S. time) or early Friday morning (Bangladesh time).

It now appears that Sidr will not weaken, and make landfall as a potentially catastrophic cyclone with a tremendous storm surge, high waves, flooding, and damaging winds.

These impacts will be felt along the northeast coast of India, Bangladesh and the northern coast of Myanmar (former Burma). These regions are highly susceptible to storm surge from tropical cyclones, and have a high potential to cause large loss of life.

I wonder what kind of warning those folks in the low lying areas will get? Many probably won't know how bad it's going to be until it hits.

Of course, they are already experiencing really bad weather, so maybe they know from past experience that this is the time to flee inland...at least I certainly hope so!

TWC just said this storm is so strong it could actually reverse the flow of the Ganges River.

Catastrophic impact expected within the next several hours.
