Saving on Vehicle Rentals

Since many of us rent cars in a port or before or after a cruise, I figured we should have a thread about ways to save money on car rentals. Copy and paste any tips you may think of.

1. Consider non-airport offices.

I know where I live, a lot of tourist will rent scooters which are way more economical. However this is only usefully with in the city and in nice weather.

I rent a lot of cars using Priceline, I have gotten full size cars for compact prices when I name my own price. The cars are usually with Hertz, Alamo or other top names. I also did good with bookingbuddy.com once.

I have also had good luck with Hotwire.com , although it is only available for pick-up/drop-off at the same location (no one-way rentals). It still is good to use if you're getting a car for the day pre/post cruise to get around the area.

I will often use a coupon from the Entertainment Book.
I know they are real savings, because I do the booking almost to completion without the coupon, and then I do it with the coupon.....
and most of the time there is indeed a real savings.

Sometimes a coupon is just the ticket to get you in the door,
and not a real savings tool.

Got to agree with that last suggestion. You can also get coupons if you are in frequent flier programs or have some types of credit cards.

Speaking of frequent flier programs, be sure to make sure your rental counts for miles!
