From my past experiances ($568 later) I learned to keep my phone on airplane mode. I have an iPhone so I can use it as a iPod when in the gym.

Regarding the charges while in the port, it happens quite a bit in fact, in Oct., when I was on a RCL ship in Port Canaveral, my phone still read "Cellular at Sea," and I was sitting docked on disembarkation morning. It's just a matter of rebooting your phone cause its stuck on a certain band. The ship has a "tower" on board just like on land.

And iPhones are really bad since even when you are not placing calls they like to ping the system to check for things like mail, updates, and the like.

Doug, isn't the iPhone smart enough to search for the lowest cost connection?
