Many ships now have their own cell towers. I do not know what the policy is but I don't think they should be active when the ship is in port. They seem to be processing calls that should be going to local towers.

Wow. I'm not a technie either. In fact, I use a pre-paid cell, basically so the school or family members could get a hold of me if necessary. But I don't sit around talking on either a landline or cell all day, or drive talking on the cell, or even walking around on the cell like I see many people do. Could you tell I don't like to be on the phone?
In fact, I got my first cell phone before our Alaskan cruise four and a half years ago. Just used it to contact taxi companies when needed. Same thing with the Hawaiian cruise (programmed a few taxi companies in the phone before I left). Only other time I turned it on was the disembarkation day to contact our car service. But I don't think I was charged any roaming for that even though I was on the ship.

When I cruise, one of othe big joys for me is being awAY from phones.
Do I take my cell with me?
Yes ... but it is turned off the minute I cross the gang plank.
Most cruises, it is not turned on again until dissembarkationday - to call for a ride.
Occasionally, IF I have a big project underway at home, I'll turn it on to check for messages every two or three days. I usually respond, if necessary, via email.
I like the others leave the cell phone off !! am a purchasing agent for a mfg co. so my days are spent on the phone, last thing I want to do on my time off is be on ANY phone !! esp. on vac. will check it for messages in case of emergencies w/ family. but otherwise it's off off off and sits in the safe. the man is very lucky, that could have been the most expensive cruise on record !!!
no cruises but a land vac. in STJ USVI.
