mango,

As a youngster, my wife and I lived in Aiea. We could look out our lanai and look down at battleship row and the Arizone memorial. In fact just prior to us transferring, they were filming Tora, Tora, Tora and we would sit on the lanai and watch the "Japanese" planes come over and make their run on Ford Island. Those were the good old days.

Now I will disagree as regards the Cultural Center . . . at least as it was 35 years ago. Have no idea what it is like now, but back then, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

John, do you think it was as expensive to live there as it is now?? Or did you have a base commissary????

!

I love the Hawaiian Islands with Kauai as my favorite. Maui is nice too but starting to get pretty crowded in the Lahaina/Kaanapali area. The Big Island is totally different due to the volcanic activity and age of the island. Waikiki, to me at least, is like any big US city except for its location. Haven't been to the Polynesian Cultural Center lately but it's primarily a tourist attraction. I agree 100% with both the Punchbowl cemetery and the USS Arizona memorial being an emotional experience especially when you stand on the memorial overlooking the battleship and small oil slicks seep out from her and drift to the surface. It's as if she and her hero crew are still trying to give us a message.

I haven't cruised to Hawaii but I flew there for 2 weeks of island hopping. Kauai is my favorite, by far, but visiting Honolulu was great as well. I totally agree with the previous posters about the Arizona Memorial. In fact, we flew to Honolulu specifically for that visit. They have a nice zoo there as well (sorry, don't remember the name). I'll try to dig back through my pictures to see if I can figure it out. Heck, you'll be in Hawaii. How could that be a bad thing. Anything you do will be wonderful.

Yes, Hawaii is wonderful! I'd love to go back there some day. Besides the Arizona Memorial you should see the Punchbowl Crater.
