I researched and built my own engagement ring on the site. Prices and selection MUCH better than any jeweler we visited, 2 day FEDEX delivery, money back if not satisfied, and I don't think they charge sales tax for any state but WA, where they are located. Had the ring appraised for insurance purposes a week after we got it; replacement value was 28% higher than the purchase price. A good deal all around.

I would be petrified to get the ring on deck, since I would be so nervous after he asked, that I might drop the ring overboard! OOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWW!
I recommend a place not too drafty, and with a floor that is easy to find things on! This is why I would prefer after dinner in the dining room.
As for the diamond, unless there is a very visible flaw, it may not be possible to see the difference in quality with your naked eye. Since you are not buying the ring as an investment, go for the prettiest, largest stone in your price range, imo.

Where is a good question. In the room is quiet and romantic and your son won't feel any pressure because it will be just the two of them. Of course, out in the fresh sea air would be nice as well. I really would ask the purser's desk/Hotel Director if they have any good ideas. I'm sure they've seen it all!
Now, the ring. I personally would go for quality over quantity. When DH gave me my ring the first thing he could say was, "I'm sorry it's not bigger." But I was thrilled with the 1/3 ct that he chose, because I knew it was from him and his heart and the 4 C's were all very high quality. Please don't let your son stress too much over the ring. If she's really not happy with the initial stone, he can make up for it later with a nice wedding band.
I'm sure however he does it, it'll be romantic. Because he is shy, I would suggest a nice quiet spot where there won't be passengers walking to and fro. I also agree not to pick someplace where a ring could fall (maybe he should scope out the area in the daytime so he won't be risking a drain) or too close to the rails. Doing outside under the stars could be great -- have a backup just in case the weather turns out to be iffy. I would go for the suggestion of asking passenger services, etc. to help, except sometimes when you bring in others, they may blow the moment (come over during an inopportune time thinking you've done the deed and you're still working your courage up) or make it into a major show.
If your son is near a jewelry outlet, he may consider checking that out.
Sonja, I'm sure you will hear all about it!!! We went tonite and Adam bought the ring. He went for the colorless stone, 3/4 carat. I'm hoping she wasnt stuck on 1 ct, it would have been lesser quality.
He was realy intrigued by the suggestion of a scavenger hunt! I will keep you all informed!

While your singing it be walking towards her and then get down on you knee and ask her if she would make him the happiest man ever and go with him to the Chapel.
Of course you need to let the people that works there in on it so they can be prepared,,,
