Seattle-Based Holland America Line and Seabourn Donate $11,000 to Northwest Harvest Hunger Relief Agency

Seattle, Wash., Dec. 12, 2011 - While volunteering last week at Northwest Harvest, an organization that feeds the hungry in Washington, Holland America Line President and CEO and Seabourn Chairman Stein Kruse made a monetary and grocery card donation totaling $11,000 on behalf of both cruise lines and their employees.
As part of the annual holiday activities, 410 Holland America Line and Seabourn employees also donated food and together provided 1,191 volunteer hours during their shifts last week at the Kent, Wash., distribution center. In 9 shifts employees processed 105,815 pounds of food for distribution to local food banks and programs.
“We are honored to support an organization that does such important work in our community, helping to ensure those who need it have a good meal,” said Kruse. “We commend Northwest Harvest for the important work that they do, which affects so many lives.”
The 2011 donation marks the fourth consecutive year that Holland America Line has supported Northwest Harvest. Since 2008, approximately 1,600 employees have volunteered at the Kent location, in addition to monetary donations. Earlier this year Seabourn moved its corporate headquarters to Seattle and their employees joined in the effort for the first time.
"Northwest Harvest relies both on volunteers and on private donations to help our neighbors in need," said Deborah Squires, director of community engagement for Northwest Harvest. "Holland America's generous gifts of both time and money will make this a much brighter holiday for hungry people across Washington state."
Northwest Harvest is Washington’s only statewide hunger relief agency. The organization supplies free food to a network of nearly 300 independent food banks and meal programs throughout the state. Relying on contributions from individuals, businesses, foundations and other organizations, 93 percent of Northwest Harvest’s total budget goes to food distribution.
