Ship docks in Fort Lauderdale with 14 percent of passengers hit with flu symptoms

The cruise ship Maasdam returned to Fort Lauderdale on Friday, with a large number of passengers and crew members complaining of flu-like symptoms during the two-week voyage.

The Centers For Disease Control And Prevention said 168 of the 1,211 passengers and 19 of 559 crew members reported being sick. Cruise lines are required to tell the CDC when 1 percent of a ship's passengers are ill.

That's too bad. Those pax spent all that time planning and all that money for that special cruise and they come down sick and their dream vacation is ruined. I feel so sorry for them. I just hope it never happens on any of my future cruises.

We have been on quite a few cruises that either went into Code Red while we were sailing or were in Code Red when we arrived at the pier -- icluding the Maasam.

We did a 20 day cruise on the Maasdam in the spring of 2007 -- first 10 days the virus broke out -- got worse the second 10 days. It was determined that the production staff brough the virus on board as they were the first ones to get sick and they had just come from another ship that had the virus.
