We are Celebrity cruisers new to Holland America. Although booked on the Equinox TA next month, we had to cancel and have taken advantage of some really attractive pricing on the Oosterdam out of San Diego in January.
Questions: Are formal nights observed on HAL, or should Ed leave his tux at home?
For the first time we booked a guarantee, an SC cabin which is a deluxe verandah suite. I noticed that there were no available SC cabins on the website. So what are the chances of an upgrade to an SB or SA? The cruise, leaving on 1/16/10 does not appear to be heavily booked outside of this category.
Though we have cruised in suites on Celebrity, this will be our first on HAL. Any special perks we should know about?
Yonnie, our HAL Navigator, is on a cruise right now and won't be back till the middle of November. She will have lots of info for you after she returns.
In the meantime, I'm sure some of our other HAL cruisers will be stopping by to put in their 2 cents worth.
I have been on 13 HAL cruises and Formal nights are observed on all of them. Two on a 7 day, Three on a 10 day, etc. There were some that did not dress up on my last HAL cruise,( no jacket or tie) and were still seated. Maybe the airlines lost their luggage and that's all they had to wear. I didn't ask them.

Gene, we always dress formally for the Celebrity formal nights, where 2/3 to 3/4 of the men wear dark suits or tuxedos so we blended right in. I had heard that Holland America wasn't as formal as Celebrity.
Of course, I haven't even been on a Celebrity cruise for over a year so that may have all changed by now.

Susan, Celebrity is still formal. We just got off the Infinity Panama Canal cruise 2 weeks ago and there were still lots of tuxes as well as suits. It was a longer cruise (16 days) and I find that the longer the cruise the more folks dress for the evening.
I might add that in the MDR on HAL cruises, shorts or jeans are never allowed on ANY night. You WILL be turned away. On Formal night 1/2 of the men wore tuxes, the other half wore a suit or sports coat, except for the few exceptions I mentioned above, who might have lost their luggage, but even they had dress pants on.

I don't remember ever seeing shorts or jeans in the X dining room, except perhaps on the last night when there may have been some jeans. Personally, jeans seem too heavy to pack for cruising unless we are going to Alaska.
We are looking forward to our January cruise when Ed will get another chance to wear his tux.
