Red face Worried about Krazy Kruizers -- Mexician Ports

Really worried about Krazy Kruizers (Yonnie & Joe) who are currently on Westerdam with FOUR upcoming ports stops in Mexico: Puerto Chiapas (4/29), Huatulo (4/30), Acapulco (5/1), and Cabo San Lucas (5/3).

They've been to all of these places before so I feel certain they won't get off the ship IF they know. Just wondering how much information HAL is giving those aboard?

It's that neither Yonnie nor Joe have the the best of immune systems ... so I'm worried!

I saw on "another board" that HAL had put 4 page info packets under doors of another ship, doing a Panama Canal cruise, about the swine flu. They of course asked people to wash carefully etc., but that ship had had no problems thus far.

This is the advisory HAL has on their website:
    "Swine Flu Reaction – Updated April 27, 2009 – 1:30pm PDT
At Holland America Line the safety, security and comfort of our guests and crew are our top priorities. There have not been any reports of people exhibiting symptoms of swine flu on any of Holland America Line’s 14 ships. No itineraries have been changed.
The Corporate Medical Office, in cooperation with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Health Canada, are monitoring the current situation closely. Holland America Line has an established robust respiratory (influenza) surveillance and treatment protocol that was developed in conjunction with CDC. The protocol has been in continuous use since its inception more than 10 years ago. Medical staff follow very clear guidelines, with a treatment protocol for the identification of influenza. Our ships can test for Influenza A and B and ships maintain a supply of the recommended anti-viral medications for influenza. Our ships’ cleaning protocols also are effective against surface contamination for
    flu virus.
Cruises with port calls in Mexico operate between late September and early May. Guests on the remaining cruises this spring will receive communication on board regarding any special precautions that might become recommended. Guests are encouraged to contact the infirmary should they show any signs of influenza and practice the healthy habits of washing hands, using sanitizer dispensers, covering mouths when coughing and not touching their mouth and eyes."

I'll see if I can find out anything about her ship.

According to the CDC, none of the resort areas in Mexico are affected - the problem is currently only in the Mexico City (Central Mexico) area.

As was mentioned, the port areas haven't reported any cases. It is reported WAY inland... The people that have become ill in the US were studying within the Mexico City area...
As with any flu, good handwashing is a must, and if you sneeze or cough, do it in your arm, not your hands...

I am sure there will be more reported cases, it will be a little bit before it peaks and plateaus. They are really discouraging travel to the Center of Mexico... port areas were in the "circle" and hopefully won't be.

But if you have to go to central Mexico, the fares/hotels will probably be very affordable right now.

Unfortunately, it's NOT just Mexico City!

The group of teens from NY who returned with confirmed cases of Swine Flu picked it up in Cancun ... which, as we all know, is very close to Cozumel.

Mindy , thanks for this! Glad HAL is letting folks currently on board know about this situation.

I'm extremely fond of KK and always worry about them traveling to and from the ship! Never thought I'd be worried about them while they were actually ON the ship.

Any additional info and updates on Westerdam or HAL's policy on port stops would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for this info, Sheila!

Thankfully, it does seem HAL is taking every precaution.

The last thing HAL needs is to take any chances at all that a boat load of *Senior Citizens (many with compromised immune systems, heart conditions, respiratory problems, etc.) get the Swine Flu.

    * Not just HAL ... any 14+ night cruise will have mostly senior citizens....

Always better silly than sorry .....
