Nothing is better at blocking the sun than the roof of a bar.........

Chuck,
I buy UV protective swimwear for me and my kids. If you do a google search for "UV Protective Swimwear" several sites that sell the gear will show up.
Anyway, I am very very pale. And as a pre-teen and teen I got about 5 severe burns. So I learned my lesson. Now living in Arizona, the skin cancer capital of the US, I have learned to cover up in the sun.
Anyway, I buy swim suits for my self and the kids that look like wetsuits only they are made from tightly woven lightweight fabric. They make the whole sun screen thing so easy.
For my DH I bought him a pair of Board Shorts and what surfers call a rash-guard. They started wearing them to prevent a rash on the chest from rubbing on the board and sand, but they found they also could prevent sunburn. Basically they are sporty looking T's made from the same lightweigh tighly woven fabric. I got one for my Son in Hawaii to go with his board shirts. Here are pictures of all of us in our one piece suits, DS in his Rashguad/Swim shirt. DH wouldn't pose for a picture in his.

The best part about covering up a little more in the sun is that you don't have to worry about sun screen wearing off or missing a spot.

I am very fair, and burn easily. I found some Spectrum SPF 50 sunblcok and still get a nice tan using it. I always apply it before dressing, too: Once I had a small patch that I missed and it was lobster red and blistered in two days. I learned my lesson after that little episode.
My youngest daughter is even fairer, a redhead, and uses SPF 70 sunblock exclusively. She burns with anything else.
DH, who never burns at home, did burn in the Caribbean. The sun is simply stronger in those latitudes. He learned his lesson after one miserable week, and now uses the same SPF 50 sunblock as I do. Yes, it takes longer to get a tan, but it beats getting cooked!
Cheers~
