    Smoking regulations

I am new to cruising and I am a non-smoker. Maybe you could give me some information about smoking requlations on a ship. I will be on the Royal Caribbean's Brilliance of the Sea's.

Some areas are more important to me than others:

The restaurants are my number one concern. Are people allowed to smoke in any of the restaurants?

Next would be my balcony. Is it possible that the people in the rooms next to me will be smoking on their balcony?

What about public areas like the pools, spas, prominade, theaters, bars, library, and computer rooms?

If you know where the smokers will be on my cruise please let me know so I can avoid those areas. For me it is a matter of health.

    Where You Can Smoke:
Beginning January 2008, smoking is permitted only on cabin balconies, on the starboard side of open decks and in the designated smoking areas of public rooms.

Where You Can't: With the adoption of the new smoking policy, smoking will be prohibited in all cabins (except on balconies) and in one public room on each ship. In addition, as always, dining areas and show lounges will be non-smoking, along with the port side of open decks.

Any passenger caught smoking in a cabin will be charged a $250 penalty. The new smoking policy will not be enacted until the summer 2008 season on Legend of the Seas, Rhapsody of the Seas and Splendour of the Seas.

Smoking is allowed in the casino. Usually they have one night of non-smoking though.

Thank you both for the rapid response. I will add this information to my personal "Cruise Details" that will travel with me.

It used to be that there were smoking and nonsmoking areas in cruiseship dining rooms. From what I understand, most, if not all, lines now ban smoking in the dining rooms. I remember in the mid 90s when we were deciding between Carnival and Royal Caribbean for a Baja cruise. Same cost. What tipped the decision to Carnival was that RC still allowed smoking in the dining rooms (or at least that's what we were told when we called RC).
