I get motion sick and I'm going on a cruise with my husband and our son in Feb. Why? Because our 8 yr old asked us if we would bring him on a cruise. It's his year to pick the vacation spot and we're going to the western caribbean for 7 nights. There are many things to prevent being motion sick; the key is to begin BEFORE you get sick. The day before our cruise I will begin taking med's on a rigid schedule (every 4, 6 or 8 hours - whatever the dose calls for) and I will wear the wristband and/or patch & have ginger ale on hand and I will not stop taking med's until I return from our trip.
I get motion sick in the car; yet I still travel by car. Is a cruise MY first choice? NOPE but it's a family vacation and we travel together.

    Anyone else have an answer?

    Hi LuLu,

I sometimes get seasick. It depends on how floaty the ship gets. A constant slow rolling feeling (I call it the elevator feeling) is what will do it to me. I normally just have a drink and that "not quite right" feeling goes away.

DH and I have done many week long land vacations and, for us, they got boring after a couple days. We love the variety of different ports, formal nights, always something to do, etc.

Plus, I'm not really a drinker so it gives me an excuse to drink

One time when I was fishing off the coast on a charter, I met a guy that goes out there every year. He get seasick every time but says he likes fishing so much he keeps doing it...

I tend to get motion sickness, especially if I try to read in a moving vehicle like a car or train. I've been on short boat rides, taking dramamine, but that makes me drowsy.

After starting to date a guy who had been on his first cruise the year before and wanted to go on more, I figured I would have to try a regular cruise. He took me on an one-day one (San Diego to Ensenada, a basic gamblers' special) and I did all right, especially after the dramamine or bonine I took.

So we booked a 7-day. I did all right, even with the rolling of the ship. A few cruises later, we were on one cruise that had heavy duty swells after leaving one port (there was a tropical storm the day before that passed by). Hubby (by then) and our 3-yr-old didn't mind it at all and had no problems falling asleep. I went down to a bar and had a ginger ale and hit the casino for a while. It didn't ruin my cruise and I was fine the next day.

We even did the Hawaiian cruise which usually has rough seas the first couple of days. I was prepared with ginger this time and took it when I got woozy. There were some people who ended up staying in their cabins the first few days. I guess if they had researched that cruise, they would have known about the sea conditions.

So I'm one of those who could get seasick, but enjoy the rest of the experience and I know that the rest of my family aren't bothered by rough seas at all. So it's worth it to me. But I guess if you can't find a remedy that works, maybe it might not be.

    Cool Good question!

I do feel the motion of the ocean (sea sick) on small boats NOT on a large cruise ship.

LuLu, I'd say this is.. I was wondering the same thing myself.

Because cruising is so much fun otherwise. I suspect those of us who do get seasick don't generally stay seasick the whole time. Otherwise, we probably wouldn't go. I was only sick the last day, when we hit rough seas on the way home (big, awesome-looking thunderstorm). Even so, there were times during the day when I felt better and times when I felt rather yucky. When I hit the yucky times, I went to my room and slept. When I felt better, I wandered around the ship for a while, sat on deck and watched the lightning, etc. I slept a good part of the day and all night too. We got off the ship the next day and I was incredibly rested for the drive home.

Had to deal with the mal de debarq for a 12-hour drive and several days after...

(I'm quite looking forward to next cruise. It can't some soon enough.)

My DH had cruised before and wanted to take me for our honeymoon. I was very recultant to go, having been seasick on a yaht before, a feeling you never want to experienc again. But I finally gave in. Now we are going on our 5th cruise togther and taking our 3yr old son for his first cruise. I have had a few days here and there when I have felt quzey and just wanted to lay down, but it has never been really bad, nor has it lasted the entire cruise. That is if you leave out our last cruise when I was 12 weeks pregnant...that was nausea of a different kind... , that took months to go away. I just have an open mind and go prepared...
Looking forward to the next cruise, Kerri

The big waves don't bother me at all. It's the slow, rolling swells.

I get queezy on ferris wheels and merry-go-rounds, but roller coasters or fast spinning rides I'm fine on. Must be something strange in my DNA
