Our last cruise was on an itinerary known for its rough seas so we booked a midships cabin. I also took ginger-flavored Altoids and candied ginger. Target used to carry Altoids, but I haven't seen any flavor at our local Target lately, but have at Walmart. Our local grocery store carried two different brands of the candied ginger. I started taking the ginger when I started feeling woozy (next time I'll just start taking it earlier than that). Many passengers ended up staying in their cabins for the first couple of days, so at least I was able to enjoy the whole cruise. My hubby and daughter never get motion sickness.
My mother is the type who gets motion sickness at the drop of a hat (or bus). You don't want to be on the same flight or bus as she, as she'll whine. My sister finally got her on a cruiseship (with patch behind her ear). She was fine. Not sure if she drank at all (usually she sticks with diet soda, which is best as one drink can make her tipsy).
If you go the ginger route, first check with your doctor about any medications you are on as there could be an interaction.
