When on Constellation last month a day out of Halifax, Nova Scotia we had a medical evacuation. The cabin TV happened to be on the web cam and my wife noticed several staff taking down the safety railings around the bow (the helicopter pad). Eventually a large transport type airplane flew over the ship shortly followed by a Coast Guard Helicopter. Two men and a stretcher were lowered, the patient secured and all were reloaded. The entire process was probably close to an hour.

Just as a side note, while on a recent cruise my wife, who has worked as a cardiac nurse, noted the absence of public access Automated External Defibrillators (AED's) on the ship, which are becoming common in malls, arenas and even restaurants. Do they keep them out of sight, or are they just poorly prepared? A gentleman had a heart attack while we were on the cruise, but fortunately we were docked in Cozumel at the time. They transported him to the hospital with his wife, then came back later for his luggage. I never heard how he faired.

    Furthermore:
My friend from Croatia just told me that man would not survive if his ship Costa Serena didn't have some state-of-the-art medical equipment (probably those defribllirators , or something... I don't know about that). Without it helicopter would arrive to late.
Thats what local media there reported...
