Fantastic Voyage on the Carnival Freedom
This is a bit belated review of my first cruise on the Carnival Freedom's 1/24/2010 Western Caribbean voyage from Port Everglades to Key West - Grand Cayman - Ocho Rios.
Arrived in Ft. Lauderdale a day earlier, we were having typical NE winter & did not want to risk missing the ship due to flight delays etc. Stayed in the Best Western Airport-Cruise-port Hotel. Hotel provided free shuttle from Ft Lauderdale airport to hotel, close proximity to a shopping plaza, restaurants & free shuttle to Port Everglades. Only issue: be certain to sign up for the shuttle EARLY,,, They overbook. Although we were required to be out of our room at 10:00 am. we did not get onto the shuttle until 12:30 pm. Check-in at the cruise ship terminal went smoothly & only took about 45 minutes to move through th boarding process. The only issue was the fact that this was the first cruise after the Freedom's Dry dock & not all the painting in the Aft area of Lido deck was completed thus the Aft hot tub & pool were closed. During the Dry Dock, the Adult Serenity section, a few balcony cabins and flat screen tvs.
We had lunch on the Lido deck, & were able to get into our room about 3:00 pm. As a first time cruisers, we were amazed by the size of the ship & having a Balcony made it even more extraordinary. We were assigned to early dining in the Posh Ding room. Food & wait staff were excellent. After Dinner we tried our luck at the casino.. (very smoky) actually won $75 which paid for excursions the next day in Key West
In Key West, we took the Conch & Museum tour visiting the Trueman ?White House? and Hemingway House. Booked excursion direct same day, no hassles & saved money over Carnival's price.
'Swam with the Stingrays & hopefully have earned 7 years good luck by kissing one. Arranged the excursion on-line with Moby Dick Tours. Again saved money by booking direct. Crew was fantastic & swimming with the Stingrays at Sting Ray City was a must.
Ocho Rios, Jamaica
In Jamaica we took the Jeep Safari Tour via Carnival & climbed Dunn's Rivers Falls. The trip thru Fern Gully was fantastic After another day at sea we arrived back in Ft Lauderdale and disembarked the ship with 45 minutes. We found a cab readily available outside the terminal and arrived more than 3 hrs early for our flight north. Unfortunately due to Air Trans policy about not putting baggage thru until an hr or so meant we were stuck with our luggage. The Air Trans personnel at the gate were the rudest & we will not fly this airline again. On the way back we learned that their was a Northeaster hitting the east coast. We were on the last flight out of Baltimore the snows made landing difficult. Overall the vacation was one of the best times for my family & I.
