The Hawaiian Islands is somewhere I have been many many times, up till we found cruising and got hooked we would go to Hawaii at least two times a year. Been to Oahu a couple of times. It is just a bit crowded for me, also been to Kauai once and probably NEVER again but Hawaii has numerous personalities just like people and Kauai was just not for us. We have been to Maui 3 times the most recent was this past May and we do like Maui a lot but our favorite place of all is the Island of Hawaii also know as The BIG Island. We especially love the Kona Coast but any where on the Big Island feels like home to us. We have been to Kona at least 8 times. I was once told that we were probably drawn to the Big Island because both Tom and I are Fire Signs. I am not sure about this but I do know that we love that Island. If anyone has any specific questions about the Kona Coast I can usually answer their question.

Also here is an interesting web site that helps a lot with info about Kona plus they have a friendly chat board. http://www.konaweb.com/

We don't have anything planned for Kona. Is there something there that would interest an eight-year-old girl? We'll be there between 8am and 4pm on Saturday, Dec. 31st. Thanks.

We saw a lot of Kauai and loved it so I am also curious. The Napali Coast, the canyon, the waterfalls, the north coast, the fern grotto plus the great restaurants and nice hotels.....AH, the memories!!

One thing that would be fun for an 8 yr old would be to go up to the Waikaloa Hilton. It is about a 45 minute drive up the Kohala Coast. You can spend the whole day there and not spend a dime. You can ride the boats or the tram around the resort grounds which is beautiful. One of the best things to do is watch the Dolphins at Dolphin Quest. Now if you want to spend money you can do the swim with the Dolphins which I have done several times and is wonderful. Here is the link with info http://www.resqwest.com/docs/hilton.asp

We have been to Kona at least 9 times and never miss going to see the Dolphins

Here is a picture taken from Hugos in Kailua Kona of the Kailua Kona pier area where you dock by tender from the ships.

I can honestly not give you an exact reason other than it rained a lot, chickens were everywhere, and we could not find a really good meal anywhere. We do not mind paying a lot for food if it is really good but I got sick on several meals including one that I am sure the chicken was Road Kill. The big reason was we saw no marine wild life. In Kona you can always see fish in the waves coming in, little crabs running around on the rocks, sea turtles in many locations. We could not find any type of marine animals plus we went on a 5 hour boat tour of the Napali Coast. We wanted to cancel because we were concerned the the waves would be bad because the weather seemed really bad, this tour company lied to us saying that they had boats out and they heard from them and the waters were calm and it was not raining and cold and windy like it was there. Well, they lied, I was sick for 4 hours, I mean very sick we have swells bigger than I have seen on any ship. Could not see the Napali Coast due to the fog and clouds. This occured on our very first day on the Island and it just never got better. Yes, It was pretty in some areas but it was not Maui or the Big Island. That is why I say each island has it's own personality and different people like different islands. Actually this is good, that way everyone does not crowd my favorite island
