I've been reading that many cruise passengers reserve rental cars in Hawaii. Has anyone here done that, and for which islands, and would you recommend doing so?

Most port areas have lots of cars available, but I did hear of one person who had a problem in Hilo because the company he had booked with had run out of cars. If you're booking in advance, it might be good to make sure that won't be a problem. With alot of people arriving all at the same time on a cruise ship you can see where problems might develop.

Thanks
I just used Alamo for land vacation & had no problems. Not far from cruise terminal. I also got lower price by using Orbitz than the amount I was bidding & getting rejected on using Priceline.
Be who you are & say what you mean because those that mind don't matter...& those that matter don't mind.
I did it EVERY stop. Courtesy picked us up in each port. We made our arrangements before we left home. Best decision we ever made.![]()
I have to say we had horrendous problems with Alamo when renting a car in Miami. If I wasn't so worn out and trying to catch up from a two-week vacation, I would have written them a pretty nasty letter. So for now, that company is off our list.

Don't bother with a rental if you're staying in Honolulu, use cabs and public transportation. There is far too much traffic and we had a hard time finding our way around town, the street names are far different than anywhere else! If you want a day trip when staying in Honolulu, there are rental agencies downtown, several of them in hotel lobbies. The parking rates overnight are very high in Honolulu also.
The other islands, no problem, they are so small and easy to navigate. Just make sure when you return the car you have plenty of time to get shuttled back to your ship.
Check where your will dock (or tender) at each port to find out what rental agency to use. Most you won't have a problem, the airports are very close to the dock. But, in Maui, if you anchor in Lahaina, the airport is on the other side of the island. You will not have that problem if you dock in Kahului.
We will be in Maui this May and we are now considering renting a car to tour around. Our first port will be in Kahalui. Do they have rental agencies near the port?
Our second day is at Lahaina and we are again considering renting and want to know the same information.
Any tips, suggestions and destination suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Muriel![]()

Remembered this thread. We didn't rent in any port. Took one taxi back and forth on a supplies trip in Honolulu. And availed ourselves of shuttles.
