Talking "Resort Getaway at Monterrico" REPORT

    "Resort Getaway at Monterrico"

    10:30 AM - 4:30 PM (6 hours) $119 pp

A large air-conditioned bus w/bathroom picked us up at the Puerto Quetzal cruise terminal for an hour's drive to Cayman Suites Oceanfront Resort. This tour was limited to 36 max so we were not at all crowded either on the bus or at the resort.

Our tour guide was great -- kept us entertained both ways. Mostly, I enjoyed driving through the many tiny villages along the way and watching people going through their normal daily activities.

The resort was quite nice. There were plenty of cushioned lounge chairs w/umbrellas around the LARGE tile pool w/swim-up bar and more lounge chairs both in the sun and shade facing the beach. The bathrooms were spotless w/showers and a changing area. There was a full cash bar. Local beer was $3 per bottle -- icy cold and very good!
For lunch we had the choice of freshly grilled fish, chicken, or beef. We really enjoyed our fish.

The beach was very clean and beautiful ... but probably not best for swimming. There's an undertow and a big drop off about 20 -30 ft. out. It was a real BLACK sand beach, not dirty white sand. We took an enjoyable walk along the beach and waded in the water -- nice soft sand,no shells, coral, or rocks.

This was our absolute favorite of all the excursions we took in 20 days!

    Thanks for the report LuLu!!

Sounds like a wonderful resort. I know that it has not been offered on any of our HAL cruises and we have been to Puerto Quetzal several times.

Yonnie, as you know, we were on a Princess cruise but it was marked NEW so maybe it'll be offered by HAL the next time you are there.

This is one I think you and Joe would like. Everything was so clean! While I very seldom swim in a public pool, I did not hesitate at this one ... absolutely clean! Since you don't swim, you would like the different levels ... nice large area for folks who only wanted to walk around waist deep. Also, the bar was fully stocked so you could get anything to drink you wished. Just a very pleasant way to spend the day!

Want to add that we had a secruity person on the bus with us who sat on that entry stair way and kept a very low profile ... dressed like the bus driver but was "packing".

We were sitting on the second row so I was able to see and hear. He watched carefully the entie time. He only got up once when a truck with many trying to get our bus to stop because they needed lhelp. He told our driver very clearly in Spanish to not stop or slow down & to telephone the location.

Later, I ask our tour guide about the security person. He told me in Spanish that because our bus was going in a different direction with no check points ... we had a security person rather than the normal armored car that follows many busses at a distance and they would pass security check points which we did not . At least I think that's what he said because he told me in a low voice in Spainsh ....

Whatever, we loved the excursion and would do it again in a hearbeat!
