Anyone been? What are the must see things? Obviously the Parthenon. But what else is there?

Also anyone been out to Cape Sounion? What did you think? Was it worth the trip?

Does anyone have photos to share?

As for the athens area u must include Theatre of Dionysos
At one time i had booked an pvt car and guide but canceled after I realized that public transportation is terriffic there.

Thanks! someone on my cruise just pointed out that website to me yesterday! I printed out the information and need to check it out.

Unfortunately, never having been to the area, I don't feel that comfortable with public transpo.

I have hired a private driver/guide though and get a great price so I can't wait to go in July!

Be sure to get a tour of the Acropolis and spend some time in the Plaka.

I am definitely doing that Terry. I have a full day excursion booked with a private guide who will take us to the Acropolis and give us time to have lunch around the Plaka, then we're going down to Cape Sounion

OK, we are docked at this port from 7 am to 6 pm in August 2008. I will be reading all of your reviews shortly. Is Piraeus just a different name for Athens, or is it a different area entirely?

Pireaus is the port. It is quite a distance from the city centre. The traffic is very heavy. There is, however, a train (or tram) which is the fastest method of getting into town. You can start off at Syntagma Square, see the Parliament Buildings and the changing of the guard. Walk through the Plaka to the Acropolis. I think the train stops at or near the Acropolis, but you would have to check it out.

If you google, you should be able to get this information.

Thanks! I am starting to learn that about most of our stops in Italy. We dock at a port city and the the well known main towns/attractions are further inland!
