I had ouzo at a restaurant in Athens, without ordering it! It wasn't too bad, it was probably only 1 ounce or less in a small glass but it does have a big kick! Our waiter was instructing us in the art of drinking it.

If memory serves correctly, we had a full course meal with lamb stew after ordering something different and the waiter saying "NOOOOO American Ladies you will like something else better" If you're ever in Athens and get pulled into a restaurant, BEWARE, it only takes 1 in your party going "hmmm" outside to their employee and you'll be inside before you know it! just eat and drink what they give you...there is no point asking for something different, you won't get it anyway

We actually did that in a Greek restaurant in Ashville, NC. Very authentic. The waiter asked us how daring were we and when we said "let's go for it" we had the most interesting dinner around. Don't know what half the stuff was but it was the same things the chef was making for HIS dinner that night.

I wish the waiter would have just said what your waiter said from the beginning. I have no idea why he gave us menus? In the end, we had a blast, the food was really good, and the waiter was funny so it was one of the highlights of our trip
