When we were in Grand Turk, we jumped in a taxi and headed to Pillory Beach at the Bohio Dive Resort. It is a beautiful beach with some decent snorkeling off shore.

The Margaritaville at the cruise dock is just not our scene. We really prefer quieter surroundings.

    A couple of photos:

    Glad you liked them LuLu.

You are so right John, it is pretty close to the Bahamas, but far enough south of it to make for warmer water in winter months.

I was at Grand Turk a couple of weeks ago, and went diving (2 tanks). My divemaster said that there are only 2 things to do on Grand Turk - drinking and diving. That seemed to be true The diving, BTW, is absolutrely National Geographic stuiff - far better than anything I've ever seen in warm water. It's like the incredibly rich waters around Vancouver but with brighter colours.

Just got badk from Grand Turk, 1/14/11. Got there at 1 pm, seas were a bit rough which made for fun waves at the beach. Cloudy all afternoon and it started raining as we left. I think the temp was in the high 70's. We went to the beach right at the end of the cruise dock and then visited Margaritaville, good margaritas! Did a bit of shopping, didn't buy anything. Didn't book any tours, we don't dive. I think it would have been nicer if the sun was out.

I had been meaning to post an update from my visit on 15 Mar 11, but have been too busy on other things!

While there has certainly been more recovery from Hurricane Ike (Sep '08) than when I was here in Mar '09, it has been very slow. There's so little money available to expedite reconstruction!

This year, I booked a visit to Conch World. Sadly, a "generator malfunction" cancelled that. I replaced it with the basic "Grand Tour." This did, at least, visit downtown Cockburn Town (but, no stops), which gave me a little incentive to try again in another couple/three years!

I do continue to wonder why the cruise facility was built? I strongly suspect somebody's bottom line! "Have minimal attractions ashore, except our purpose-built facility!"

How very sad that anyone would even think that way. The little complex at the dock is the only place that's "manufactured". The rest of the island is very honest. BUT the activities here are water-based. If you go with the right operator, the scuba diving is simply National Geographic quality - I've never seen the likes of it. Even the locals will tell you that there are 2 things to do on Grand Turk - diving and drinking.

I've got a few photos and comments from my day at Grand Turk last November posted at http://explorenorth.com/wordpress/?p=607
