Unique Conch World Shore Excursion Opens in Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands
Posted on 09 June 2009
The Grand Turk Cruise Center, owned by Carnival Corporation & plc, partnered with Cockburn Village & Farm, Ltd., to develop Conch World, a new eco-friendly attraction in Grand Turk, which welcomed its first visitors today — guests from the cruise ship Carnival Pride.
Four years in the making, this unique million-dollar-plus tourism attraction offers informative guided tours, as well as provides visitors the opportunity to photograph highly entertaining trained conchs Sally and Jerry.
Conch World is the only tourist facility devoted to the Queen conch located at a cruise destination and is only the second such facility in the world. Guests can also visit the Bare Naked Conch Café to savor delicious farmed conch prepared in a variety of ways and the Pink Pearl Gift Shop which sells a variety of conch-related merchandise.
Conch World CEO Chuck Hesse and Queen conch Jerry are pictured here at the new attraction. Official grand opening festivities are set for fall 2009.
This is great and doesn't surprise me, when we were there just after Grand Turks opened their cruise port, we went to Governors beach and they were all over the beach and in the water!
I was a good girl and asked the beach excursion people if I was allowed to take one home and to my surprise they said yes, as many as you like!!!! They said they multiply like our rabbits and were a pain to natives there sometimes!! I only brought one home though
Editors Note : I meant the empty shells were all over and thats what I brought home.
When Pungo3 and I went snorkeling in G.T., they just HAD to stop at a beach first and make everyone watch an extended demonstration on how to slaughter a conch.
Maybe now, they will do the public conch killings at Conch World, and let the snorkelers do what they came to do - snorkel.

Luckily we did not see a demonstration of that! The shells were already empty! We were told they have a natural short life span.
