Many of us have enjoyed a port day in Grand Turk. And, we followed the news as Hurricane Ike left damage across the Turks and Caicos, and near utter destruction on Grand Turk itself.
The wonderful people of Grand Turk have helped us enjoy carefree days on their island... Now, there is a way we can help them in a time of great need. The following is posted on the home page of the Cruise Center's website:
Make a gift to Operation Helping Hands Fund for Grand Turk
Eighty-five percent of homes on the island were either damaged or destroyed and, while some governmental and relief organizations are assisting, much more help is needed. Grand Turk is a small island and its’ plight is currently receiving little media focus or international attention.
Carnival Corporation & plc has acted swiftly to rebuild the port with plans to reopen the Grand Turk Cruise Center by October 8, 2008. This will bring much needed cruise tourism money back to the island quickly. Our efforts are not limited to the port itself. We are rebuilding certain island facilities like roads, signs, public areas, as well. And we are also continuing to take care of the port facility’s 42 employees, many of whom have lost their homes.
To provide further help to the people of Grand Turk Island, the United Way of Miami-Dade has agreed to set up a fund that will be earmarked specifically to Grand Turk. This will assist the residents of Grand Turk in rebuilding after this devastating storm.
A special website has been established by United Way to collect monetary donations for Grand Turk Island. Any dollar amount you may wish to donate will be of tremendous assistance and greatly appreciated by those in dire need at this time. The link to make a donation is: https://www.unitedwaymiami.org/grandturk.asp
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way. I've traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren't paved.
Most people walk into and out of your life . . . but FRIENDS leave footprints in your heart
Me, too.
The paypal one I donated to was for Salt Cay, which is nearby to Grand Turk.
Salt Cay got it BAD... they were even cut off from all communications of any kind from the other islands. Don't know if that is still the case or not.
Anyway, I couldn't find a PayPal one foro Grand Turk, but Salt Cay needs help, too, and I figure I will be able to help Grand Turk in person the week of October 12.
Several of the folks on thoe Group Cruise in October want to take a few relief supplies to Grand Turk... we would each like to take along an extra duffel bag containing things someone in Grand Turk might be able to use.
W are looking for a CONTACT there ... maybe someone from a civic club or church . . . someone who can tell us what packable items are needed, and where we can take them once we arrive.
Can anyone put us in contact with someone there?
I emailed info@grandturkcc.com (the cruise Center's email address) last week, but have heard nothing from them. Possibly their email is still down.
