Taken from a current passenger (not me I'm at home) onboard the Grand right now and they posted this on another board:
We have just experienced a heavy list starboard on the Grand Princess departing from Galveston, Texas. We we're eating supper when the ship listed so heavily that glassware, dishes, ornaments, and numerous objects fell to the floor with a crash. We, and several other passengers, immediately left the dining room and headed to the outer 7th deck where the lifeboats are located. People were frustrated and confused not knowing what was happening.
We noted the ship's wake aswe had made a very sharp 180 degree turn to port and are now heading back towards Galveston. The captain finally made an announcement several minutes later stating that he had made an emergency turn to return back to Galveston as there is a critically ill patient on board in need of urgent medical attention.
We hope that there is no intrinsic problem with the ship itself, but we feel that the ship is continuing to slightly list to starboard as we head back. We do know that there have been mechanical problems with this ship for several weeks and perhaps it is now getting worse. Also, you would expect a life-flight helicopter to retrieve a critically ill patient as we are not far off the Texas coast as we just left port around 4:45 PM; instead of rerouting the ship back to Galveston as this will take over 1-2 hours to return.
Things have stabilized now as I am writing this but we do not know if the cruise will continue or if there will be any port changes. We arre grateful that his happened so early in the trip as it could have been quite frightening if it had occurred while we were in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico and/or while we were sleeping.
The captain has just announced that galley services are now unavailable and the dining room has been temporarily cleared.
We will update as we learn anything new.
