2 OVERBOARD on Grand

CNN just brought a news flash that there is a search on for two passengers on the Grand Princess, with fears mounting that they may have gone overboard.

No more details were released.

New details

Again, from CNN:

Two people - a man and a woman in their 20's - have been rescued from the water.
The ship is now anchored about 200 miles from Galveston, which was yesterday's port of departure.

All I know is, there is NO WAY a person can "just fall off a cruise ship" without some kinda shenanigans going on.

Yep.
That's the first thing I thought when I saw the wording on the crawler.
And, even if you assumed a person could fall off, what are the odds that something so freaky as to cause two to do so would happen?
Just doesn't make sense!

Supposedly fell off their cabin balcony.

They were rescued 5 hours later by the US Coast Guard.

Details this hour, according to our Newsbot, who is getting his info from KTRE TV in Lufkin, Tx, say the Coast Guard did NOT make the rescue as reported by CNN:

The Coast Guard command center in New Orleans reports there were found hours later by the cruise liner itself, which turned around and dispatched its own boats. Another cruise ship nearby offered assistance.

A Coast Guard spokesman says the woman is "safe and alive" and reports the man is "moving" but hasn't been checked out medically. A Coast Guard helicopter is standing by in case they need to be evacuated to a hospital.

From Princess:

3/25/2007
Grand Princess Rescue -- Media Statement

This morning at 1:30 am local time, when Grand Princess was approximately 150 miles off the coast of Galveston, two passengers were reported to have gone overboard. After a four-hour search and rescue operation, we are extremely happy to report that the two passengers, a 22-year-old man and 20-year old woman, were successfully recovered, and appear to be in satisfactory condition. They are currently undergoing a medical evaluation by the ship's medical staff.

We would like to recognize the exemplary seamanship of the captain and crew of Grand Princess, as well as the support of the U.S. Coast Guard, for this successful rescue.
It appears that the passengers went overboard from the balcony of one of the passenger's cabins. When alerted to this, the ship stopped, initiated an emergency search operation, and returned to the position where the overboard incident was initially reported. Rescue boats were launched from Grand Princess, and the U.S. Coast Guard was notified. One passenger was rescued at 5:30 am, while the second passenger was rescued at 6 am.
Grand Princess departed Galveston Saturday afternoon, March 24, at 5 pm on a 7-day Western Caribbean sailing. She is carrying 2,783 passengers and 1,122 crew.
