    Which Line?

(Newbies) Partner and myself are saving up for our first Transatlantic crossing this Fall. Knowing in advance that these particular sailings are pretty much low-key, we were wondering which line we most likely would have a larger/eventful time with GLBT occupancy. Is Cunard our most sure bet? Or does Celebrity rank up there too? We traveled Cunard way back (Vista fjord 1993) and encountered many people that had no "issue" with "the boys at their table" and made friends of two passengers and three crew members. We are not looking for a R.S.V.P. or Atlantis type affair. We are non-flamers (but watch the quick witted tongues :-) And adore spending time with people of all walks of life. So I am asking all you seasoned cruisers which line would most likely fulfill this type of request for a Transatlantic crossing.

    Transatlantic

Hi there. Can only speak for Cunard as we did the Transatlantic on QM2 in 2007. We found the entertainment on board fairly understated, but that was no problem for us as we had just been tearing around Boston and New York for 7 days! The service across the ship was exemplary - the food in the dining room was sublime. Even though there were many Americans on board, our fellow passengers were quite reserved, quite 'British' - maybe it's the ambience of the ship that rubs off on the passengers? Loved the ship so much, that we took her around the Caribbean in 2009. The only thing I would say about the TA crossing is that losing/gaining an hour a day plays havoc with your body clock - I don't suffer that badly from jet lag! But it's one of the great voyages and I would recommend Cunard for a very relaxing crossing, with first class service and dining. After all - this type of voyage, the ship is the destination.........

I'm not familar with Cunard but have sailed Celebrity many times.
I'd say you would be very comfortable sailing on celebrity as I have met numerous
GL passengers and enjoyed their company and interaction with them.

I have to admint to being a Cunard fan, but I am sure you would be very happy on QM2, for a "true" transatlantic voyage. Cunard is very GLBT friendly so I am sure you would not have any problems.

Cunard is a very formal line so things tend to be calm, that's one of the things I love about it, but I know that's what some would see a boring.

Cruises booked: Queen Victoria August 2012 and Queen Elizabeth December 2012.

Thank you Nauticamiss, reggierail and Lanky Lad for your imput on this. Yes, Nauticamiss, I guess the atmosphere does indeed have alot to do with the mood. Thanks for the reminder about body clocks. Does QM2 have light therapy to aid in body cercadian rhythm? Reggierail we are ready to sail with Celebrity and are looking forward to that time. We have read many positive things about Celebrity. Lanky Lad...Boredom is a vital problem for the moralist, since half the sins of mankind are caused by the fear of it. -Bertrand Russell. We have no fear of boredom. Thanks again for your input.

Hi If you enjoyed the Vistafjord (we did) then you should consider the Queen's Grill on the QM2, if you chose accomodation in the Britannia class you may well end up disappointed. However, if you have plenty of vacation time I would seriously consider Silversea cruiselines, their vessels leave Europe in October and sail back to the New World (approx 15 days onboard). The attentive service, good dining and "all inclusive" policy make them a similar a price for suite accomodation on the other mainstream cruiselines. Seabourn is also worth considering if you like a more informal holiday.

Crikey - that all sounds very technical!! QM2 may have such a facility, but we just powered through naturally..........Really felt sorry for the crew however, as they race across the Atlantic in one direction or the other - losing hours then gaining them the following week. That must be tough. Incidentally our dance teacher and his partner have been on QM2 several times and have adored all the attention. They were very much in demand as dance partners. Do you dance?

All transatlantic crossing have a higher ratio of gay people on board than cruises that start and end in the same place. Gay people I have spoken to explain that they have access to one way tickets home at a greatly reduced price (or fly free with a partner as airline employees), or will be extending their vacation on the other end, at a gay-friendly destination such as London, a Greek isle, or various spots in Spain, Amsterdam, etc.

We had a lot of gay guests on board, every time I've done a crossing on Royal Caribbean. I already know gay people on the roll calls for the next transAtlantic I'm doing on Holland America. I'm thinking this is consistent on all cruise lines.
