I find I have to be in the right...'mood'....and then, if I'm willing to play "Julie the cruise director, " I actually engage the "lurkers" as they walk by...many times, all someone needs is an opening....wait, THAT'S not what I meant! .

But I will admit to skipping FOD sometimes...as we usually are on board with many friends from past cruises...and I know I'm not looking for more people to meet....but I try to be open to chatting with just about anyone...

I don't understand. Why bother turning up to an event and then not at least introduce yourself and stop for a drink? Most FOD meets aren't that exciting but how do you tell until you've spoken to some of the participants?

Joey, it's sort of the problem....you (anyone) stop(s) by, don't/doesn't stick around, then the next couple does the same thing...builds on itself to be a failure. But taking the effort might build to be a success...

That said, totally understand that I'm not always available for these things...I try, but do skip the meetings sometimes....and I'm also not always interested in being social at the very moment that these things are scheduled. But I do usually make the effort to smile/chat with other GLBT folks during the course of the cruise.

true but we really don't go on cruises for FOD or meeting other couples... we aren't big fans of all gay or for that matter all any type cruise... we cruise because we enjoy dressing up and for the most part being pampared...

We tend to talk and make conversations with anyone who speaks to us...

I guess we may be the exception to the rule...

No, I think we're actually similar....but I still remember my college days (as an older, returning student!) where I took upon myself the extra duty to act as a guide for others...a host, as it were... to make sure people were comfortable. I did it in classrooms, and still do it on cruise ships. I know I'm on vacation, but if, without totally changing the focus of my trip, I can extend a hand to make others feel comfortable, I usually do...

For that matter, I tend to do it with any other folks too...I'm sure there's some psychosis burried deep in there from watching too many episodes of "The Love Boat" combined with hosting too many of my mother's cocktail parties!

Count us in that as well. I just don't see why you'd walk through an FOD meeting and regularly decide that you wouldn't stop.

You're not the only ones who walk through and don't stop - Next time try stopping and talking. You might find that there's someone of interest there

We've found that it's not so much meeting someone at a FOD gathering but that you then meet them about the ship. On one short trip last year there were only about 10 people at the FOD meeting but it seemed that wherever we went there was always at least one couple from that group there. It meant that we has someone to chat with each evening and that in port we kept bumping into people we knew.
