I know this post is ancient but even through 10 pages nobody has fully answer the question as to where "Friends of Dorothy" came from.

Yes, it's definitely from the Wizard of Oz, but that only tells half the story. In one scene of the WofO, the Wicked Witch peers into a giant crystal ball. She shrieks "I'll get you Dorothy Gale! I'll get you, and your queer little friends...!".

THAT's where it comes from.
